Why is the E in Pokemon different? – Gaming FAQ (2024)

In Pokémon, the E is not normal, but rather it is accented (alt code 0233 or copy and paste to use it). This accent suggests that the E sounds like it does in hen or résumé. However, most people don’t actually know what the accents mean, and rather just ignore them.

The reason for the accent (which you usually find in pronunciation dictionaries) is because without the accent the word Pokemon would be pronounced poke-mon. The accent on the ‘e’ gives the sound ‘ay’, so that it sounds like Pokay-mon. The accent on the ‘e’ is basically the instruction manual on how to pronounce it.

You can tell a pokemon is elite, by the [E] in front of it’s name and the message ‘An Elite Pokemon has appeared’. The encounter rate for Elite Pokemon is 1/200, and is not affected by Gold Membership. Elite Pokemon are stronger versions of wild pokemon.
