How do I find a local obituary? ›

You can typically find current obituaries through a simple online search (if one was written). Most funeral homes and cremation providers publish obituaries on their websites. Older obituaries are becoming increasingly easier to find online. Search old newspapers or genealogy sites.

At the State Office, death records are available from January 1919 to the present for deaths that occurred in the State of Georgia. Some counties may have older death records in their files. Those county vital records offices may be contacted directly.

The two major obituary resources are the Denver Obituary Project from the Denver Public Library and the Colorado Obituary Project from the Colorado Genealogical Society.

MyObits offers obituary creation and sharing, as well as announcements for funerals or memorials and lets you order flowers to send your condolences from the app.

While death certificates are public records, access to certified copies with the cause of death is limited to immediate family members or legal representatives.

Death certificates become public records after 50 years. Then any person may obtain an uncertified copy of the death certificate, upon submission of application form and fees.

In 2022, the South Carolina General Assembly passed S.C. H3325 which requires funeral homes and medical certifiers to complete, certify and file death certificates electronically.

Our phone number for public inquiries is 614-466-2531. The Bureau of Vital Statistics maintains birth records from December 20, 1908 and death records from 1971 to present. Fetal death records, heirloom birth certificates, and stillbirth certificates can also be ordered.

Vital records, including birth, death, adoption, marriage, and divorce, are confidential per Colorado state statute (C.R.S. 25-2-117). As a result, Colorado vital records are not public records and therefore not searchable online. Vital records can only be released to those who are eligible.

Two state-level California Death Indexes can be found at Ancestry.com (a database anyone can access from any library branch and Central Library) or FamilySearch.org (a free internet database).

Many funeral directors post the details of the funerals they're officiating on their own websites. Online funeral notices have the advantage that they can be updated quickly, and some provide updates via email.

New York Public Library subscribes to many databases that can help researchers locate obituaries and death notices. The most useful are our newspaper databases. Oftentimes obituaries can be located by entering a person's name and week of death into the newspapers databases.
